Artist of the Month
JULIEN FROM FLORIDA
It's time for new Artist of the Month, and this time we'd like to present 'Julien From Florida'! I first came across Julien while looking for music to put into the weekly playlist (#23) and his style and upbeat nature really grabbed my attention. Ever since then he has regularly featured within our playlist whenever he drops a new track, since they are always great tunes! What I also like about Julien is that he tries out different styles and sounds but still tends to keep a familiar thread throughout. Another thing I like about Julien is everything is yellow, you can spot one of his tracks a mile away as its just simply yellow, which from a visual point of view I think is so simple and interesting. Overall I think Julien has talent and is going places, we're super excited to see where he takes his music and always keen to see his next release. As a result he is definitley one to watch and why he is our Artist of the Month!
Tell us a bit about your history
Hellow! My name is Julien. I’ve been producing for 3 years now, I wear yellow every day, & I’m from Florida clearly haha.
What got you into music from the beginning?
It all started in 7th grade when I started learning how to play Deadmau5 & Daft Punk songs on my piano keyboard my parents got me for Christmas. From there I started writing my own little tunes that I would play for my friends in band class. Later, in high school, my best friend started making music on this app he had on is phone & I was blown away! I didn’t know you could do that haha so I did some research about how I could start making my own music, I stumbled upon FL Studio, & It was all uphill from there haha.
How would you describe your style of music?
Future Bass/Future Beats probably but I honestly don’t know. I just listened to my entire discography & each song sounds super different but they’re all bangers.
How would you describe yourself?
I’m very methodical when it comes to everything, especially my music. From each element in a mix, to how I brand myself, or how often I release is heavily calculated & deliberate. I guess you could say I like my life optimized for maximum performance.
Where does your love for yellow come from?
So yellow is like a symbol to me. It represents happiness, positivity, fun, warmth, & just good vibes overall. So I wear yellow every day as a reminder to just be happy & grateful to be alive & its those feelings of happiness & fun that I hope to people take away from my music.
Who influences your music?
I think we were all inspired by Deadmau5 back in the day haha! But these days I’m very inspired by guys like Chuck Sutton, Zotti, Ellzo, & Jacob Collier just to name a few.
What media has influenced your music? Movies, books, television, video games, etc
I’m definitely influenced by the music in video games such as The Legend of Zelda & Super Mario. The music in Super Mario is just so fun, playful, cute & I try to capture the same feeling with my music. The music in The Legend of Zelda, however, is very emotional & storytelling, while still being catchy & enjoyable.I believe capturing both aspects seperates a good song from a great one.
What do you do after work? Do you have any other hobbies…
I used to be super into drawing & for a long time that’s what I thought I would be doing for a living. I was the president of my high school’s art club & National Art Honor Society. I even drew this hyper realistic portrait of Handsome Squidward that won a couple art contests haha! But I stopped doing all that when I got FL Studio.
What motivates and inspires you?
My biggest motivators are the people that really like my music. It makes my day when someone hits me up & tells me how much they like my song & how much it means to them. It makes the hours & hours I spend tweaking one parameter on a synth all worth it haha. However, what inspires me is music theory. I spend a lot of time researching different concepts & when I stumble upon something that’s really interesting, I’ll open up FL studio & apply it immediately haha.
Can you recommend any good playlists or channels?
Definitely Phuture Collective & all their sub channels for sure. Night Owl Collective, Good Society, & of course Disguised Collective ;).
Where do you find new music?
I spend a lot of time on Soundcloud & so I’m constantly listening to new music. It isn’t hard to find new songs & artists because I swear everyone is just so talented haha!
Who would you most like to collab with?
JACOB COLLIER FOR SURE. His music is just on another level. I’d love for him to sing a microtonal vocal line over one of my tracks. & if you haven’t heard of him please stop what you’re doing & listen to his song “Moon River” right now! I promise you it will change your life haha.
Finally, what plans do you have for this year?
Definitely be on the lookout for new music! I have a bunch of label releases & collabs coming out pretty soon! Also getting some more yellow clothes would be sick too. Maybe I should start a merch line?
